The History of
Crossroads Medical Mission
Dr. Paul Derden and Dr. Tim Schwob, longtime friends and family practice physicians, met during their medical school residency. Throughout their training and early careers, they treated patients who often faced significant barriers to accessing affordable healthcare. Distressed by the widespread inability of many patients to afford care, Dr. Derden and Dr. Schwob began dreaming of a way to make a difference.
In 2001, their dream became a reality with the founding of Crossroads Medical Mission. With the leadership of Executive Director Cindy Rockett, the mission set out to provide care to those most in need.
Bringing Care to the Community
In January 2002, we launched a mobile medical clinic – a “doctor’s office on wheels” – designed to bring free preventative and urgent care directly to underserved communities throughout the Mountain Empire. The mobile clinic allows us to reach individuals in need, including those who are uninsured, underinsured, or otherwise lack access to healthcare.
We partner with local churches, homeless shelters, food pantries, and service organizations – groups already deeply connected to the people we aim to serve. Through these partnerships, we bring vital healthcare services to those who may otherwise go without.
Our Mission
At Crossroads Medical Mission, our focus is on providing quality, compassionate care to individuals who fall through the cracks of the healthcare system. We specialize in serving the uninsured, underinsured, and those with limited access to care. Our goal is to meet immediate health needs while also providing preventive care that helps improve long-term health outcomes.
In 2022, we expanded our reach by opening a stand-alone clinic in downtown Bristol, VA. Looking ahead, we are excited to announce plans to open a Behavioral Health Clinic, HOPE at the Crossroads, in 2025, to provide integrative care and support for mental health needs in our community.
At Crossroads, we believe that everyone deserves access to affordable healthcare, and we are committed to making that a reality for those who need it most.
